What is a smart drug?
Nootropics are also known as: smart drugs, memory enhancers, neuro enhancers, cognitive enhancers and intelligence enhancers. Their goal is to enhance mental capacity. There is different types of nootropics but they all improve mental capacity like concentration, memory, intelligence, motivation and attention. Dr. Corneliu E. Giurgea is the first to have use the word nootropic.
Dr. Croneliu E. Giurgea criteria for nootropics:
- Improve Memory and learning abilities
- Improve learned skills under condition that would normally weaken them.
- Guard the brain against chemical or physical injury
- Minimal sides effects
Uses of Nootropics:
There are many different nootropics that improve cognition, memory, concentration and impulsive behavior. These nootropics are mostly used for treating cognitives or motor problems but more and more people in the scientific community recommend their use for human enhancement virtues.
In some school, Modafinil is being widely used to improve productivity. A survey made found that 7% of students admit to have used stimulant to get a cognitive edge. On certain university, up to 25% of respondent say they have use them in the past year. Stimulant are mostly used by student going to very competitive university.
Different class of nootropics:
You can divide Nootropics in different class: Racetams, Vitamins and supplements, Stimulants
Ex: piracetams, racetams oxiracetam. The way they work on the brain hasn’t been fully understood but each compound act a bit differently than the other and they appear to act as a positive allosteric modulators of AMPA receptors. Also, they seem to modulate acetylcholinergic systems.
Vitamins and supplement
Ex: B Vitamins, Choline, Omega3, Isoflavones, Vitamines D, etc… Those vitamins and supplements have been shown to help maintain and improve cognitive functions.
Ex: Amphetamines, Xanthines, Caffeine, Modafinil and Nicotine. Stimulant are nootropics because of their Productivity enhancing propriety. Some stimulant can improve cognition and memory in some people. They usually will stimulate concentration and cognition. Certain people in the scientific community recommend the use of stimulans by the population to improve brain ability.
